History
The project's development started in 1999 when Australian teacher Sylvia Burgess saw a need to build a home and community for hundreds of Kenyan orphans in desperate need of care.
In 2005 we purchased two solar panels, one to power the three lights and television in the children's home and the other to power the phone. We also overcame a water shortage with the purchase of a 2000L water tank.
In 2007, 4 pedigree goats, 1 Billy, 3 Nanny goats and 200 chickens were donated to Ligusa Children's Centre, giving the children fresh milk and eggs.
Today Ligusa Children's Centre is a home for 40 orphans and has a focus for coordinating the care of a further 42 children in the village. We also develop opportunities for the locals to be employed by the centre through cooking, caring for animals, maintaining the grounds and caring for children who have been robbed of their families.
Ligusa Children's Centre has been developed to help the local community. It has become a home for orphans, a provider of jobs for locals and is constantly developing solutions to become increasingly self-sustainable.
2010 School building project was drawn up by the community.
2011 Glenn Julie and Ben climbed Mnt Kilimanjaro raising funds for stage one
2012 First school building reached completion - still in need of desks, seats, display boards and blackboards
